High-resolution anal manometry

High-resolution anal manometry maps pressure along the anal canal in fine detail. A slim catheter with closely spaced sensors records the pressures produced by the sphincter muscles at rest and during squeezing and pushing, and the readings are displayed as a continuous map rather than a few separate points. The detail shows where along the canal a weakness or a poorly coordinated pattern sits.

When continence or difficult defecation is the question, knowing precisely where pressure is lost or misdirected changes what is recommended. Dr. Gomez may use this level of detail to distinguish a weak sphincter from muscles that are strong but working against each other, and to establish a baseline before pelvic floor therapy or surgical evaluation. It is the more granular counterpart to a standard anorectal evaluation.

The study is done awake, without sedation, and takes place in the office. You lie on your side while the catheter is placed, and you are guided through rest, squeeze, and push maneuvers while the sensors record. Most people describe it as pressure rather than pain. The catheter is removed when the recording is finished and you can go back to your usual activities.
