Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an examination of the large intestine, or colon, using a thin flexible tube with a camera at the tip. The camera sends a clear view of the colon lining to a screen as the tube is guided through. If a growth called a polyp is found, it can usually be removed during the same exam and sent to a laboratory for testing.

Colonoscopy is the standard way to screen for colon cancer, because polyps can be found and removed before they ever become a problem. It is also the clearest way to look into changes in bowel habits, bleeding, abdominal pain, or anemia — a low red blood cell count. Dr. Gomez recommends it when a direct look at the colon lining will answer a question that other tests cannot.

The colon is cleaned out beforehand with a preparation the office reviews with you in advance. Sedation is standard, so most people are comfortable and remember little of the exam. Because of the sedation, you will need someone to drive you home. Findings are discussed with you afterward, and anything sent to the laboratory is followed up once results return.
