Anorectal manometry

Anorectal manometry is a functional evaluation of the muscles and nerves of the rectum and anal canal — the part of the body that holds stool and releases it. A small soft catheter with sensors, and a small balloon, measure muscle pressure at rest and while you squeeze, push, and hold. The test also measures sensation: how well the rectum registers fullness and signals the urge to go.

When constipation or loss of bowel control does not respond to the usual measures, the reason is often coordination rather than anything visible on a camera exam. Dr. Gomez may recommend this test to understand whether the muscles are working together as they should during a bowel movement, and whether sensation is intact. What it shows guides treatment, including whether pelvic floor retraining, or biofeedback, is likely to help.

No sedation is needed, and there is no bowel preparation like a colonoscopy; the office gives you any instructions when you schedule. You lie on your side while the catheter is placed and are coached through simple actions — squeeze, push, hold — while the sensors record. Most people describe pressure and awareness rather than pain. The catheter is removed at the end and you can return to your usual routine.
